Set behaviour based goals
Setting behaviour based goals is the first step of the process (you don’t actually have to set goals to get started with deBa but we consider that this is best practice). It is important to note that these are not KPI style goals that result in rewards or punishment depending on the result. The goals are designed to give the individual specific behaviours and practices to focus on, and the leader direction on what to coach. Goals can be changed and amended at any time and in fact, it is encouraged to change goals the moment the current goal is no longer relevant.

Communicate
Communicate: a leaders greatest tool is to communicate, regularly and informally. deBa encourages leaders to do so and reminds the leader that there are three types of conversations that should be occurring:
Coaching: The leader is imparting direct knowledge and expertise to the team member
Supporting: The leader is re-affirming and/or collaborating with the team member
Recognition: The leader is recognising good behaviours.
Track the conversation
Once the conversation has occurred, the leader takes 10 seconds to record the fact that the conversation has occurred. IMPORTANT: This is not a record of the conversation – Leaders must not waste time typing lengthy descriptions of the conversation. The conversation has happened, it is over, this is simply a record that it occurred, what type of conversation it was and what behaviours/values/goals where discussed.

Dashboard
The dashboard is a powerful feature of deBa that enables leaders to hold themselves to account to firstly ensure they are talking regularly with everyone in their team and that they are balanced in their type and frequency. The dashboard ensures that regular and meaningful conversations become an ingrained habit within a workplace. Furthermore, the dashboard enables the leaders leader (or coach) to track their leadership behaviour – providing high fidelity touch points and focus areas to help them improve.
